Carl graduated after reading Physics at Imperial College London and subsequently obtained a PhD from the University of St Andrews in the field of laser physics and nonlinear optics.

Carl began his career in intellectual property in 1998 at the Defence Research Agency of the UK Ministry of Defence (later QinetiQ), where he dealt with inventions from a range of high tech fields including radar, RF/microwave electronics, semiconductor devices & fabrication, fibre optics, lasers, nonlinear optics and satellite communications.  He moved into private practice in the Midlands in 2009, broadening his professional experience, and subsequently spent a year working in the defence industry in Germany before returning to the UK.  

Carl joined BRYERS in 2016 where he currently covers a variety of technology areas including telecommunications, defence technology and computer security, as well as packaging technology and related manufacturing processes.
